When ASUSTeK released their first Eee PC, the portable computer market had never seen such a product. Aimed to provide users with a product that was both affordable and equipped with a decent number of features, the Eee PC has

had some considerable success. Other manufacturers have taken Asus' product as a model and then released their own version of the Eee PC. One such company is Hong Kong-based Bestlink, which has recently released its Alpha 400 notebook.

This notebook has been featured with a price tag of $250, which also includes shipping. The rather small price tag will provide users with an ultra portable that features a 7-inch LCD screen, most probably the product's most significant feature. The Asian company had to make a few compromises in order to get to lower the price so much. In the end, all those compromises can be seen in the technical specifications of the computer.

Acquiring an Alpha 400 notebook will mean users will get a portable computer that features an Ingenic Semiconductors 32-bit XBurst CPU. This central processing unit has been designed to work at a frequency rate of 400MHz, which appears to be enough to satisfy both the unnamed Linux OS and Windows CE. You will also get 128MB of RAM memory and a maximum storage space of 2 GB on a flash-based internal storage solution. The technical specs clearly separate this product from all the other Windows XP capable portable computers.

Alpha 400 has USB support, which you can use to extend your overall storage capacity. When it comes to connectivity too, Bestlink was also forced to make serious compromises. The notebook doesn't provide WiFi support, but an Ethernet port is available. There are two USB ports and you will be able to connect a headphone or a Mic device through the provided Audio ports.

The Asian-made notebook measures 8.3 x 5.6 x 1.3 inches, has a total weight of 1.5 pounds and is apparently available in six colors.

The rather generous 250 GB storage space is contained on a small notebook size, 2.5-inch drive. Performance-wise, this Iomega product provides a high speed USB 2.0 transfer speed of 480 Mbits/s. Don't be fooled by the stylish look of the drive, as it seems that it doesn't come short of security features either. Tips berbagai cara menyimpan satu halaman web

Ketika kita menjumpai halaman web dengan artikel yang menarik, dan ingin disimpan penuh termasuk gambarnya, maka pada umumnya bisa digunakan menu standard : File > Save as ( Internet Explorer atau Opera ) atau Save Page as ( Mozilla Firefox ) kemudian dibagian save as type dipilih Web Page, Complete, sehingga seluruh halaman web akan tersimpan. Tetapi hal ini ada beberapa kelemahan, yaitu banyaknya file yang akan ikut tersimpan dan jika ada satu image yang loading (tampil) nya lama, maka sering halaman web tidak bisa tersimpan. Adakah alternatif atau cara lain yang lebih baik ?

Berikut beberapa alternatif atau cara lain jika kita ingin menyimpan penuh satu halaman web.

Menyimpan dalam web archive

Bagi pengguna Opera mungkin sudah tidak asing dengan fasilitas ini. Kita dapat menyimpan satu halaman penuh termasuk gambar yang ditampilkan dalam sebuah file saja ( Web Archive ), yang bisa ditampilkan di web browser secara offline. Caranya melalui menu File > save as, kemudian dari window yang tampil dipilih tipe ( bagian Save as type ) web archive ( single file), file nantinya akan tersimpan dalam format *.mht ( Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension HTML / MHTML / MHT ) . Bagi pengguna Internet Explorer, mulai versi 7 fasilitas ini juga telah tersedia, yaitu ketika menyimpan halaman memilih tipe Web Archive, single file ( *.mht).

Menyimpan dalam format pdf

Hal ini sangat berguna jika kita ingin menghasilkan satu halaman web dalam bentuk pdf. Bagaimana caranya ? Gunakan saja software gratis seperti PDF Creator, CutePDf, PrimoPDF dan sejenisnya. Bisa dilihat artikel : Membuat dokumen PDF gratis dan mudah. Jika software ini sudah diinstall, kemudian kita ingin menyimpan halaman dalam format pdf, tinggal memilih menu File > Print, kemudian pada bagian Printer - Name dipilih software pdf yang telah diinstall, misalnya CutePDF, PDF Creator atau lainnya lalu klik Print. Dengan aplikasi ini kita bisa mencetak apa saja dan dari tampilan apa saja ( asal ada menu Print ) dalam format Pdf. Sepertinya Mozilla Firefox 3 nantinya akan menyertakan fasilitas save as pdf sedangkan browser Safari sudah menyertakan fasilitas ini sejak awal.

Menyimpan dalam format Image

Hal ini mungkin jarang kita ketahui, dengan fasilitas ini kita bisa menyimpan tampilan web dalam image. Untuk bisa melakukan hal ini, diperlukan browser Mozilla Firefox dan tambahan plugins, salah satunya yang bernama Save as image. Install plugin dari sini. Setelah diinstall dan Firefox di restart (jalankan ulang), akan tampil sub menu tambahan “Save Page As Image”, tinggal dipilih menu File > Save Page As Image. Maka akan tampil image yang akan disimpan dengan beberapa pilihan Style, area dan output (Format dan Quality). Kita bisa memilih format PNG, JPG atau GIF.

Bisa juga menyimpan dalam format image dengan aplikasi screenshot, seperti SnagIT dan sebagainya, tetapi hal itu kurang praktis.

Ketika menulis sebuah artikel, berita atau apa saja di web/blog, akan terasa kurang jika senantiasa hanya berupa text. Image atau gambar kadang sangat diperlukan selain untuk memperindah tampilan, juga memberikan gambaran yang lebih jelas tentang artikel yang kita tulis. Ada beberapa format image yang biasa digunakan di web, yaitu JPG, GIF dan PNG. Sebagian orang tidak begitu memperhatikan pemilihan image ini, karena yang sering dikenal selama ini JPG, maka hanya itu yang digunakan. Memang format JPG mempunyai ukuran yang relatif kecil, tapi apakah senantiasa seperti itu ?

Pemilihan image ini sangat mempengaruhi kecepatan web / artikel kita ditampilkan, jika ukuran besar maka loading juga akan lambat dan sebaliknya, maka selain kualitas, ukuran juga penting untuk diperhatikan. Berikut karakteristik secara singkat ketiga format image tersebut.

GIF (Graphic Interchange Format)

GIF ini pada awalnya merupakan format yang banyak digunakan untuk web, bahkan telah menjadi format standard ( dikenalkan sejak 1987). Meskipun GIF dapat mangandung berbagai macam warna 24-bit ( 16.777.216 macam warna ), tetapi satu image gif hanya dapat mempunyai kombinasi sebanyak 256 warna (8-bit-per-pixel), sehingga untuk gambar dengan kombinasi warna yang banyak seperti foto, jika diubah ke format GIF akan terlihat pecah-pecah. Format ini cocok untuk file dengan tampilan warna yang terbatas/sederhana, seperti gambar dengan blok warna-warna tertentu, garis dan text. Keunggulan format ini dapat digunakan untuk menyimpan animasi, sehingga masih sering digunakan untuk banner (iklan). Karena masalah lisensi kompresi yang digunakan, maka dibuatlah format pengganti GIF yaitu PNG.

JPG atau JPEG ( Joint Photographic Experts Group )

Pasti sebagian besar kita sudah tidak asing lagi dengan JPG. Format ini cocok untuk gambar dengan kombinasi warna yang banyak dan komplek, seperti foto pemandangan dan sebagainya, karena menyimpan warna 24-bit. Oleh karena itu format ini paling umum digunakan dalam dunia fotografi, mengingat ukuran file yang relatif kecil dengan kualitas yang tetap bagus. Jika ingin menampilkan gambar dengan kombinasi warna yang kompleks, dan ingin tetap mempertahankan kualitas tampilan, maka jpg merupakan pilihan terbaik. Hanya saja, JPG tidak mendukung transparansi.

PNG (Portable Network Graphic)

Berawal karena masalah lisensi format GIF, maka dibuatlah format PNG ini. Pada awalnya dukungan PNG masih terbatas, tetapi saat ini hampir semua browser sudah mendukung format ini. Tidak seperti GIF, format ini dapat menyimpan kombinasi warna 24-bit, tidak terbatas hanya 256 warna. Ukuran file yang dihasilkan relatif lebih kecil dari format GIF. Terdapat banyak kelebihan dibanding format GIF, hanya saja PNG tidak bisa menyimpan animasi, meskipun ada format turunan untuk animasi, yaitu MNG. Selain itu, browser lama seperti Internet Explorer 3 dan sebelumnya ( jika masih ada yang memakai) belum mendukung format ini.

Seperti GIF, format ini sangat cocok untuk menyimpan image dengan kombinasi warna yang sederhana, seperti text garis dan blok warna. Image dengan ukuran lebar dan tinggi yang besar dapat mempunyai ukuran yang sangat kecil, jika hanya terdiri beberapa blok warna dan text saja. Tetapi sebaliknya, walaupun gambar cukup kecil, tetapi jika kombinasi warnanya cukup komplek, seperti pemandangan, foto dan sejenisnya maka ukurannya akan besar. Keunggulan lain format ini adalah dapat menyimpan transparansi / alpha channel.

Bagi yang pernah / sering menggunakan anti-virus, pasti tidak asing lagi dengan istilah-istilah seperti heal, quarantine, move to virus vault, dan sebagainya. Ketika kita sedang scan file/folder, kemudian ditemukan virus/file yang terinfeksi, biasanya akan muncul konfirmasi file tersebut mau diapakan, atau juga mungkin secara otomatis file tersebut akan dihapus atau masuk karantina, tergantung jenis anti-virus dan pengaturannya.

Bagi kebanyakan orang mungkin ketika terdeteksi sebagai virus akan langsung memilih hapus untuk keamanan. Jika data-data yang terkena virus tidak begitu penting, mungkin tidak menjadi masalah. Tetapi jika merupakan data penting, maka sebaiknya atur agar jangan langsung dihapus, bisa di move to quarantine atau move to virus vault, sesuai dengan anti virus yang digunakan. Apakah data masih bisa diselamatkan? Bisa Iya bisa Tidak.

Jika file atau data kita terinfeksi oleh virus lama, kemungkinan masih bisa diselamatkan. Bagaimana langkah-langkahnya ?

Sebelumnya, jika data kita cukup penting dan terdeteksi sebagai virus jangan dihapus, tetapi pilih move to vault atau masukkan ke karantina ( move to quarantine ), agar nantinya bisa di buka lagi. Jika antivirus langsung menghapus, atur kembali di bagian setting-nya.
Catat nama/jenis virus yang terdeteki menginfeksi file. Biasanya antivirus mengetahui virus yang menginfeksi. Perlu diingat bahwa setiap anti virus sering memberikan nama tersendiri dengan virus yang ditemukannya. Jadi satu virus bisa memiliki nama hampir sebanyak anti virus yang ada.
Cari informasi tentang nama virus di Internet, gunakan google. Atau bisa juga ketika kita online menggunakan fasilitas informasi bawaan anti virus yang ada, sehingga lebih akurat.
Temukan karakteristik virus tersebut dan cara mengatasinya.

Virus Removal

Virus Removal merupakan tool atau aplikasi khusus yang dibuat untuk melumpuhkan, memperbaiki atau untuk menangani virus-virus tertentu. Biasanya para pembuat anti-virus juga membuat berbagai virus removal untuk tipe-tipe virus tertentu. Hampir semua virus removal ini dapat di download secara gratis. Google bisa dikatakan sebagai salah satu search engine terbesar dan terlengkap didunia, dan hampir sebagian besar pengguna internet termasuk di Indonesia pasti sering menggunakan fasilitas ini. Tapi apakah kita termasuk pengguna yang hanya mengetikkan langsung kata/kalimat pencarian di search engine nya ? atau maksimal hanya menggunakan fasilitas tanda petik? atau kita sudah berkali-kali melakukan pencarian tetapi hasilnya tidak memuaskan ? Apakah ketika mencari file pdf anda sudah biasa dengan menambahkan pencarian dengan filetype:pdf ?

Hampir semua [top] search engine menyediakan fasilitas customisasi pencarian, termasuk google. Tetapi sebagian pengguna mungkin tidak atau belum memanfaatkan fasilitas ini. Walaupun fasilitas yang disediakan sangat banyak, minimal kita tahu dan bisa menggunakan beberapa fasilitas yang cukup penting. Misalnya :

Ketika mencari dua kata atau lebih, agar tepat sesuai kalimat yang ditulis, gunakan tanda petik

Komputer Mati mendadak

Sudah beberapa kali saya kedatangan teman (pelanggan ) yang komputernya mati, tidak mau menyala sama sekali atau kadang hanya sampai tampilan awal kemudian berhenti / hang. Untuk mengetahui dan memecahkan masalah komputer tersebut, ada beberapa tips yang bisa dilakukan, sesuai dengan permasalahan yang dihadapi.

Komputer yang mati/ hang sebelum masuk ke sistem operasi bisa penyebabnya bisa bermacam-macam. Berikut Tips yang sudah pernah saya praktekkan dan hampir selalu berhasil. Pilih yang sesuai dengan permasalahan yang dihadapi, atau lakukan secara bertahap.

Cek Kabel, mulai dari Kabel yang masuk ke UPS/Stabilizer, kabel Power ke Monitor, kabel Monitor ke CPU dan kabel yang masuk ke Komputer. Pastikan pemasangannya telah sesuai dan kencang, serta arus listriknya ada dan cukup.
Jika terdapat CD-ROM / DVD-ROM dan bisa dibuka/tutup, maka kemungkinan permasalahan ada di komputer (CPU), mulai dari kabel power yang masuk ke motherboard atau motherboard itu sendiri, cek pemasangan kabelnya.
Jika dua langkah diatas sudah dicek, dan masih belum menyala, matikan komputer dan Reset BIOS di Motherboard. Caranya bisa dilihat di buku panduan motherboard, dan cari menu Reset BIOS. Biasanya untuk mereset BIOS dapat dilakukan pada Jumper 1 (JP1). Disana ada 3 pin, yang 2 diantaranya dihubungkan dengan sebuah konektor kecil. Untuk mereset, tinggal melepas dan memasang di 2 pin yang satunya. Misalnya 3 pin tersebut 1,2,3 dan pin 1 dan 2 sudah terhubung, maka untuk mereset tinggal melepas dan memasang di pin 2 dan 3. Biarkan sekitar 30 detik atau lebih kemudian kembalikan seperti semula. Nyalakan komputer.
Jika BIOS telah di reset dan masih tidak menyala, coba lepas Baterai CMOS, yang ada di motherboard. Diamkan sekitar 1 menit, kemudian dipasang kembali dan nyalakan komputer. Jika baterai sudah cukup lama, lebih dari 3 tahun, ada baiknya diganti dengan yang baru. Apalagi jika jam di komputer sering tidak cocok.
Jika kipas Processor / VGA berputar, tetapi komputer masih belum menyala, maka kemungkinan ada yang tidak beres dengan BIOS motherboard atau Motherboard memang sudah rusak. Mungkin BIOS perlu di Update, tetapi sebelum update, komputer harus bisa menyala (masuk BIOS) terlebih dahulu. Untuk melakukan hal itu, coba lepas kabel Hardisk, CD-ROM, Floppy. Kemudian, lepas Memori komputer (RAM) dan ganti di slot yang lain atau gunakan memori komputer lain. Hal ini mungkin harus diulangi sampai beberapa kali, hingga ada tanda-tanda kehidupan…
Jika CPU sudah kelihatan bekerja, hardisk berputar dan lampu led CPU berkedip-kedip tetapi monitor tidak ada tampilannya, maka kumungkinan VGA ( Kartu Grafis) komputer yang bermasalah. Coba ganti dengan VGA lain atau cek VGA tersebut di komputer lain (Hal ini jika VGA tidak jadi satu dengan motherboard).

Jika dengan semua langkah diatas, komputer juga belum menyala, mungkin komputer perlu di service orang yang lebih ahli. Untuk mengetahui lebih detail permasalahan motherboard atau ingin menjadi teknisi, sebaiknya membeli sebuah alat khusus yang disebut PC Analyzer, yang memang dirancang untuk mengetahui kerusakan motherboard. Silahkan berbagi pengalaman anda mengenai komputer yang tiba-tiba mati dan tidak mau menyala.. semoga bermanfaat.

CPU yang dimaksud diatas adalah Motherboard, Memori, CPU, Power Supply, Hardisk, Floppy dan komponen lainnya yang ada dalam Casing Komputer, selain monitor. Meskipun sebenarnya CPU adalah Central Processing Unit (Processor), misalnya Pentium4, AMD dsb. Hal ini untuk mempermudah saja.

Menormalkan windows terinfeksi virus

Biasanya komputer yang sudah pernah terkena (terinfeksi) virus, maka beberapa setting Windows di Disable (tidak bisa diaktifkan). Hal ini karena Sistem Registry Windows sudah diubah oleh virus. Sebenarnya bisa saja mengembalikan secara manual, tetapi mungkin sulit ( bagi yang masih awam dengan registry), tidak aman dan lama. Bagaimana cara yang lebih mudah dan aman?

Registry merupakan komponen (File spesial) yang sangat penting bagi Windows, dengan mengubah beberapa bagian registry, kita bisa lebih mengoptimalkan kinerja komputer. Tetapi hal ini seringkali dimanfaatkan virus, dengan mengubah konfigurasi sehingga sering beberapa aplikasi atau setting tidak bisa diakses.

Misalnya beberapa kejadian berikut :

Task Manager tidak bisa dibuka (Ctrl+Alt+Del), selalu muncul Pesan “Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator”
Ketika ingin membuka Registry ( di Menu Run ketik Regedit ), muncul pesan “Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator”
Tidak ada menu Folder Options di Windows Explorer
Menu Command Prompt tidak ada da tidak bisa dijalankan

Sebagai alternatif mengubah secara manual, banyak freeware yang menyediakan fasilitas ini. Biasanya software-software “tweak” memanfaatkan registry untuk mengoptimalkan kinerja windows. Salah satunya adalah TweakNow WinSecret Professional. Freeware ini dapat digunakan untuk Windows XP/XP x64/Vista/Vista x64.

TweakNow menyediakan fasilitas untuk mengubah dan mengotimalkan berbagai hal, mencakup :

Hanya saja, untuk versi 1.5 belum menyediakan fasilitas untuk menampilkan Folder Options yang di hidden, padahal virus sering menghilangkan menu ini. Untuk mengembalikan secara manual, bisa di atur setting Registry di lokasi berikut :

Sebenarnya Microsoft sendiri juga membuat aplikasi kecil untuk mengubah beberapa setting di registry, sehingga beberapa fasilitas tersembunyi dapat dimunculkan, Namanya TweakUI yang tergabung dalam Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP. Meski tampilannya sederhana dan ukuran hanya sekitar 147 KB, tetapi memberikan fasilitas yang cukup banyak. Download TweakUI disini.

Jika ingin mengutak-atik registry sendiri, silahkan download Windows Registry Guide ( File CHM / HTML Help dengan ukuran sekitar 1.15 MB). Tutorial ini memberikan artikel yang melimpah untuk mengedit registry. Tapi silahkan dibaca tutorial awalnya jika, karena jika tidak hati-hati, bisa merusak sistem.

Jika kita mempunyai sebuah web site/blog, terkadang kita tidak menyadari bahwa user yang membukanya belum tentu melihat persis ketika kita mencobanya. Mengingat begitu banyak web browser yang tidak sepenuhnya kompatibel. Selain itu, kadang kita juga perlu melihat seberapa cepat web site kita dibuka, apa saja yang membuat loading web kita sangat lambat. Bagaimana jika kita ingin mengetes hal tersebut?

Browsershots memberi fasilitas screenshot web site dalam berbagai web broser yang berbeda. Web browser yang disediakan cukup banyak, mulai dari Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, Konqueror, K-Meleon sampai browser yang jarang kita dengar. Karena banyaknya browser yang tersedia, maka sebaiknya hanya memilih beberapa browser yang sering digunakan saja, karena jika terlalu banyak memerlukan waktu yang cukup lama.

IE NetRenderer

IE NetRenderer memberi kita fasilitas untuk mengecek bagaimana sebuah web site ditampilkan dalam browser Internet Explorer 8 beta 1, 7, 6 dan Internet Explorer 5.5. Karena pengetesan satu persatu dan hanya untuk Internet Explorer, maka relatif lebih cepat dari browsershots.

Kita juga bisa mengetes tampilan web kita di HP yang menggunakan sistem operasi Windows Mobile atau Blackberry di BrowserCamp atau melalui Opera Simulator (memerlukan plugins Java)

Pingdom memberikan layanan ini secara gratis. Kita tinggal memasukkan nama web site dan setelah diproses maka akan ditampilkan waktu loading setiap file ( HTML, CSS, gambar, javascript, flash dan lainnya) dengan ukurannya. Fasilitas ini sangat bagus untuk meningkatkan proses loading dan mengetahui apa saja yang membuat web site kita loadingnya sangat lambat.

Web Page Analyzer

Selain Pingdom, Web Site Analyzer juga memberikan fasilitas untuk mengetes kecepatan loading web site. Perhitungan mencakup ukuran file,total object, komposisi dan waktu download. Selain itu setelah dilakukan pengetesan, diberikan juga analisis dan rekomendasi untuk mengoptimalikan web site.

BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) secara sederhana merupakan sebuah system di dalam Chip Motherboard yang bertugas mengenali dan menyiapkan perangkat keras/hardware komputer saat PC dinyalakan, seperti Hardisk, Processor, Floppy Disk, Memory, DVD Rom dan lainnya. Jika semua beres maka Sistem Operasi (seperti windows,Linux) baru mulai dijalankan

Jika komputer berjalan lancar atau tidak mengalami masalah, memang tidak perlu untuk melakukan upgrade (memperbarui) BIOS di komputer kita. Karena memang sangat beresiko bagi yang belum terbiasa, jika kurang hati-hati komputer malah tidak bisa dioperasikan lagi ;). Tetapi ada beberapa hal yang menyebabkan BIOS harus diupgrade, misalnya :

Ketika komputer dinyalakan, tiba-tiba berhenti sebelum masuk sistem operasi. Tetapi sebaiknya baca juga artikel ini.
Komputer sudah cukup lama, dan kita memasang hardware baru yang tidak terdeteksi dengan baik, misalnya kita ganti Processor baru. Karena sering BIOS belum mengenali processor tersebut.
BIOS rusak, baik ditunjukkan dengan adanya pesan ataupun tidak. Misalnya invalid BIOS, BIOS corrupted dsb.
BIOS gagal mendeteksi hardware, seperti hardiks, CD-ROM, VGA dan lainnya
Ingin [sedikit] lebih mengoptimalkan kinerja komputer (hardware)
Adanya recomendasi dari vendor Motherboard

Jika BIOS di komputer rusak, maka otomatis tidak bisa menjalankan Sistem operasi seperti Windows Xp misalnya. Beberapa hal yang bisa menyebabkan kerusakan BIOS misalnya :

Mematikan komputer tanpa shutdown, atau listrik tiba-tiba mati (tanpa UPS)
Terkena Virus
Kesalahan meng-upgrade BIOS. Misalnya komputer mati ketika proses upgrade, BIOS tidak cocok dengan jenis motherboard dll.

Bagaimana meng-upgrade BIOS Komputer?

Untuk meng-upgrade BIOS, diperlukan 2 file, pertama file BIOS itu sendiri dan Flash Memory Writer utility, yaitu software untuk mengupgrade (flash) BIOS, misalnya AFLASH.EXE, AWD816a.EXE dan lainnya. File BIOS biasanya dengan ekstensi 001, BIN atau lainnya, sengan ukuran kurang dari 512 KB. Kebanyakan Untuk mengupgrade BIOS harus dilakukan melalui DOS atau MS-DOS, meski saat ini juga sudah banyak vendor yang menyediakan software yang berbasis Windows.

Yang perlu diperhatikan adalah mencari file BIOS dan Flash Writer yang tepat, karena jika tidak sesuai, komputer kemungkinan bakalan tidak bisa hidup lagi. Tetapi jika tipe sudah tepat, maka kemungkinan selalu berhasil, kecuali mati listrik atau komputer mati ketika flash BIOS sedang berjalan. Pada umumnya flash BIOS hanya berlangsung beberapa detik saja. Kurang dari 30 detik. Untuk melakukan flash BIOS, setelah masuk ke DOS, ketikkan nama Flash Writer, misalnya untuk AWD816a.EXE

Maka biasanya ada keterangan cara pemakaiannya. Ikuti perintah yang ada, pastikan juga untuk membackup BIOS yang lama, dapat dilakukan dengan file flash writer itu juga. Keterangan yang ditampilkan mungkin berbeda-beda. Jika masih ragu, sebaiknya ditanyakan kepada yang lebih tahu. Atau bisa juga dibaca di buku petunjuk motherboard.

Bagaimana Cara menentukan Tipe Motherboard?
Ada beberapa cara menentukan tipe Motherboard yang dimiliki, antara lain :

Melihat buku petunjuk yang disertakan ketika membeli Motherboard
Melihat Tampilan awal ketika komputer menyala, biasanya ditampilkan seri atau tipe motherboard
Melihat langsung motherboard (membuka casing komputer), disana biasanya ditulis merk Motherboard dan tipenya.

Dimana Download BIOS dan Flash Utility tersebut?

Jika motherboard kita termasuk populer, maka vendor biasanya telah menyediakan download BIOS dan Flash Utility-nya, seperti MSI, Gigabyte dan sejenisnya. Berikut beberapa link untuk download BIOS maupun driver motherboard yang bisa dijadikan referensi :

AVG versi 8.0 menyediakan download trial version yang bisa dicoba semua fasilitasnya selama 30 hari. Saya sendiri sudah mencoba menggunakan AVG 8.0 Anti Virus ini, tetapi sedikit kecewa dengan penggunaan CPU yang cukup berat dibanding sebelumnya. Memadukan PCMAV dengan database virus ClamAV

Mengizinkan PCMAV untuk memaksa membersihkan file yang terinfeksi.
/REGCLEAN
Mencoba mengembalikan registry dan setting "Tools Folder Options" ke kondisi default.

Bagi teman teman yang mau download antivirus terbaru PCMAV 1.1; rilis April 2008, Silahkan download!.

Sepertinya majalah PC Media edisi 03/2008 belum selesai saya baca, tapi tadi sore Majalah PC Media 04/2008 sudah datang, dan tentunya kedatangannya membawa serta rilis terbaru PC Media Antivirus (PCMAV) dalam keping DVD. Ada juga tambahan satu CD yang jika dibaca dari covernya berisi 12 edisi digital Majalah PC Media tahun 2007, mengikuti adat ketika memperingati ulang tahunnya. Sekalian saja saya ucapkan Selamat Ulang Tahun untuk Majalah PC Media.

PCMAV yang disertakan pada edisi ini adalah PCMAV versi 1.1. Dan dalam file readme.txt dijelaskan, masalah integrasi dengan ClamAV yang membuat bingung sebagian pengguna ketika mengikuti petunjuk di file Reame.txt sudah diakomodasi pada versi ini dengan menyesuaikan untuk dapat menggunakan library ClamAv rilis terbaru yang saat ini tersedia yaitu versi 0.92, disamping berbagai perbaikan dan improvisasi lainnya dan tentunya penambahan database pengenal dan pembersih 67 virus lokal/asing/varian baru yang dilaporkan menyebar di Indonesia.

Majalah PC Media edisi 12/2007 terbaru telah terbit dengan disertai ekstra ISO DVD Microsoft Windows Server 2008 RC0. Tak ketinggalan, PCMAV 1.0 RC22 pun ikut dirilis bersamaan dengan edisi ini. Dalam rilis kali ini, PCMAV mampu mengenali 1259 virus beserta variannya yang banyak menyebar di Indonesia.

Jika pada PCMAV RC21 kami telah mengumumkan bahwa rilis tersebut merupakan yang tercepat dari yang pernah ada, maka di PCMAV RC22 ini kecepatan pendeteksian tersebut semakin disempurnakan hingga 40%-50% lebih cepat. Mau download PCMAV Rc21? PCMAV 1.0 RC 21 sudah keluar dan diberitakan bahwa versi ini 3x lebih cepat dari versi yang sebelumnya (ada yang sudah pernah membandingkan?). Tapi ada yang aneh dalam antivirus ini, dia terdeteksi sebagai virus oleh beberapa program antivirus seperti McAfee (W32/virut.h), Kaspersky (Virus.Win32.Virut.ac), AVG (Virus.Win32.Virut.O), dll. Untung yang PCMAV-CLN.exe nya bisa di-clean jadi masih bisa dipakai (ternyata ga bisa dipakai), dan yg RTP-nya langsung di-delete sama antivirus. Gimana nih PCMAV? Setelah investigasi kecil-kecilan ternyata hasil download saya sdh terkena virus sebelumnya, bukan karena kesalahan dari PCMAV. Alhamdulillah kini telah hadir revisi untuk PCMAV ini dan penambahan update1 (dan sudah ga kedetect virus lagi)

Dari file readme.txt yang disertakan, pada rilis ini ditambahkan database pengenal dan pembersih 89 virus lokal/asing/varian baru yang dilaporkan menyebar di Indonesia. Niat cari kerja malah ketipu

Rekan yang sedang mencari pekerjaan (menganggur atau ingin beralih profesi) harap SELEKTIF dalam mecermati iklan lowongan pekerjaan baik di KORAN atau di INTERNET. Sekilas tidak ada yang aneh dengan iklan lowongan pekerjaan tersebut, tetapi jika diperhatikan lebih lanjut maka ada pola dunia usahanya hampir sama, berdalih PELATIHAN (TRAINER) bidang Finansial tetapi di ujung kita diminta untuk ber-INVESTASI atau dikenal dengan nama TRADER atau FUTURE atau PENANAMAN Modal berjangka.

Jika sewaktu-waktu anda menemukan iklan yang berbunyi seperti gambar dibawah (entah dikoran atau Internet) , harap Pelamar hati-hati. Tak sedikit korban pelamar yang waktu dan uangnya terbuang percuma. Dan rasanya sudah terlalu lama mereka bebas melakukan aksi penipuannya.

Eko Juniarto mengingatkan saya bahwa pernah beberapa kali terjadi penipuan berkedok lowongan pekerjaan. Para pelamar dijanjikan posisi ‘Marketing Executive’ atau posisi lainnya yang terkesan bagus. Tetapi pada kenyataannya para pelamar tidak mendapat gaji tetap dan terkesan perusahaan tersebut bukan ingin mencari karyawan, tetapi mencari koneksi ke orang-orang yang memiliki banyak uang untuk ‘diinvestasikan’. Bahkan ada beberapa ‘pelamar’ yang kehilangan uang setelah ‘melamar’ pekerjaan ke perusahaan tersebut.

Perusahaan yang dimaksud salah satunya adalah Maxgain atau Graha Finesa. Berikut adalah beberapa tulisan di Internet yang membahas perusahaan ini.

Boss…, terus terang saja saya sudah 3 hari ikutan training di PT. Graha Finesa Berjangka di Wisma BNI 46 Lantai 28. Alhamdulillah walaupun terlambat tapi saya tetap bersyukur karena saya nggak akan kelamaan ngikutin tuh “BLOODY F***ING TRAINING” yang ternyata sebenarnya hanya akal-akalan si “MOTHER F***ER” atawa ide dari “BOSS-BOSS SIALAN” PT. GRAHA FINESA BERJANGKA doang..!!.Gimana Nggak harus bersyukur Boss, kalau saya ngikutin Training maka biaya “TERBUANG PERCUMA” yang harus saya keluarkan dari saku seharinya saja melebihi Rp.50.000,-dengan perincian:
1. Bahan bakar = Rp. 20.000,- (Dengan asumsi pada hari pertama saya interview saya isi bensin Rp. 50.000,-, dihari ketiga saya ikutan Training saya harus isi bensin lagi. selama tiga hari tersebut Mobil tidak saya gunakan kemana-mana selain perjalanan PP dari rumah saya ke Wisma BNI 46).
2. Makan Siang+Minum = Rp. 15.000,- itupun makan di Kaki Lima / belakang gedung Artha Graha.
3. Biaya Parkir dari jam 08:15 s/d 16:40 = Rp. 18.000,- Demi Allah (bukannya saya takabur)Uang sebanyak itu tidaklah seberapa besar bagi kami (Alhamdulillah Istri saya saat ini masih bekerja), tapi kalau sekarang ini saya mengetahui bahwa saya tidak akan mendapatkan posisi yang saya lamar, dan malahan akan diarahkan kepada posisi lain yang notabenenya pasti tidak akan saya mau terima (jadi Investor…?? Uang dari mana..?? wong saya nyari kerja itu untuk nyari uang Koq..!! Kumaha iyeuu teh…??? GELO SIA…!!), sah-sah sajakan kalau saya katakan “TERBUANG PERCUMA”..???. (saya Kasihan dong sama Istri saya, dia khan sudah capek-capek kerja). Kenapa saya sampai ikutan di hari ketiga…???
1. Karena saya merasa senang, gimana nggak wong sudah cukup lama menganggur ada panggilan kerja (Ehh.ternyata saya terlampau ke GE-ERan, Hik..hik..!!).
2. Saya desperate sekali untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan saat ini. Persaingan antara/sesama pencari kerja saat ini sangatlah tinggi ditambah lagi biaya pengeluaran untuk kebutuhan hidup (sekolah anak, listrik, telephone,bahan bakar kendaraan, dsb)semakin meningkat.
3. Dihari pertama dan kedua saya selalu dijelaskan oleh wakil dari PT. GRAHA FINESA BERJANGKA bahwa saya wajib mengetahui apa usaha yang dilakukan oleh perusahaan, untuk itu saya harus mengikuti job training dahulu, baru pada akhir training, enduser dari departement yang saya lamar akan menilai performance saya dan merekalah yang akan menentukan saya diterima atau tidak.
3. Dari pada tidak ada kerjaan, saya berpikir saat itu nggak ada salahnya untuk ngisi waktu luang.
4. Kesalahan saya sendiri, karena sehari sebelum Interview pertama, saya hanya membuka halaman pertama sewaktu saya search PT. GRAHA FINESA BERJANGKA di Google, jadi belum mengetahui adanya forum ini (Forum ini ada di halaman 2).Sekali lagi “SYUKUR ALHAMDULILLAH” karena sekarang saya dapat mengetahui kinerja PT. GRAHA FINESA BERJANGKA yang sebenarnya. Terima kasih untuk Boss Priyadi untuk mengadakan Forum ini.Memang sangatlah sulit untuk mencari “BUKTI” atau “MODUS” yang mengarahkan bahwa PT. GRAHA FINESA BERJANGKA melakukan tindakan pidana berupa “Penipuan”, karena di satu sisi sebenarnya secara kasat mata ini jelas-jelas “PENIPUAN BERKEDOK LOWONGAN PEKERJAAN”, tapi sebaliknya (sisi lainnya) kita sulit untuk membuktikannya karena menurut saya pasti mereka akan berargumentasi bahwa:
1. Perusahaan mereka mempunyai izin resmi.
2. Perusahaan mereka terdaftar di salah satu Lembaga/Badan Institusi Resmi Pemerintah RI. (Departemen Perdagangan/BAPEPTI, dsb).
3. Mereka berhak mencari calon tenaga kerja sebanyak-banyaknya dengan cara mereka ini karena mereka juga akan bilang tidak ada satupun undang-undang dinegara ini yang melarang suatu perusahaan melakukan tindakan atau cara-cara seperti yang mereka lakukan selama ini.
4. Mereka tidak menipu/menggelapkan uang pencari kerja, mereka pasti akan berdalih bahwa mereka sebenarnya malahan memberikan “Training” secara gratis, mereka hanya menawarkan kalau si pencari kerja itu mau ikutan menjadi penanam modal (Investor) atau tidak.
5. Mereka akan bilang mereka telah memberitahukan kepada para Investor bahwa Investasi yang dilakukan oleh PT. GFB adalah Futures dan merupakan investasi yang sangat menguntungkan serta sangat beresiko (High risk and high return).
6. Kalau terjadi loss paling-paling mereka akan mengatakan:
a. Telah terjadi kesalahan investasi akibat Investor/Trader memiliki pengetahuan yang kurang.
b. Dalam melakukan investasi perlu memakai logika, semakin besar potensi keuntungan yang diperoleh akan semakin beresiko.
c. Dalam melakukan investasi perlu mengetahui karakteristik dari investasi itu sendiri, peraturan2 nya, ketentuan2 nya.Gimana nih para Bapak-Bapak dan Ibu-Ibu Pejabat yang berwenang akan permasalahan ini. Saya yakin betul Bapak dan Ibu tidak akan menganggap bahwa semua tulisan (uneg-uneg) saya beserta teman-teman sesama pencari kerja lainnya yang tertulis didalam forum ini hanya sekedar tulisan/cerita untuk menuh-menuhin forum ini doang..!! (PASTINYA TIDAK DONG….!!!). Saya mohon dengan sangat “Para Ahli Hukum” dinegara yang sama-sama kita cintai ini, tuang dan berikan kami pengetahuan/ilmumu, karena semua itu sangatlah kami butuhkan saat ini karena semua itu pula dapat membantu kami(para pencari kerja), agar dapat mencari celah pelanggaran hukum yang dilakukan oleh PT. GRAHA FINESA BERJANGKA serta perusahaan lain yang melakukan hal/cara yang sama, agar dimasa mendatang saudara-saudara kita yang akan mencari kerja tidak mengalami nasib yang sama dengan yang kami alami saat ini.
(KOQ SAYA BERUBAH JADI PUITIS SEPERTI INI HE.HE.HE..!).Perlu saya tekankan disini bahwa saya bukanlah ahli dalam bidang(masalah hukum) seperti ini, bahkan boleh dibilang saya “BUTA” sama sekali, tapi seperti apa yang pernah saya katakan diatas, masalah ini sebenarnya secara kasat mata terbukti ada unsur “Penipuan” (PT.GFB melalui perwakilannya selalu meyakinkan si pelamar bahwa seolah-olah posisi yang mereka lamar itu ada, tapi mereka harus mengikuti
“Training” terlebih dahulu, Nah pada kenyataanya diakhir Training ternyata mereka akan diajak untuk ikutan menanam modal atau mencari calon penanam modal dan BUKANNYA diarahkan untuk menempati posisi yang mereka lamar terlebih dahulu atau seperti apa yang selalu diyakinkan oleh perwakilan PT. GFB).Entah kenapa tiba-tiba saja rasa nasionalis saya muncul, terus terang saya merasa kasihan sama rekan-rekan pencari kerja yang baru akan diinterview oleh PT.GFB yang notabenenya adalah saudara sebangsa dan setanah air saya yang saat ini sebenarnya tengah berjuang untuk mencari nafkah/penghasilan, namun pada akhirnya mereka akan membuang uang mereka dengan percuma (minimal ongkos dan biaya makan siang), Hanya karena mereka tidak sadar bahwa mereka akan diarahkan kepada posisi kerja yang lain daripada apa yang mereka harapkan / inginkan. PT. GRAHA FINESA BERJANGKA hanya berkeinginan mendapatkan Penanam Modal (Investor) baru agar mereka juga mendapatkan Brokerage Fee sebesar US$ 240.00 per Trade dipotong US$ 30.00 untuk Komisi Trader. Dalam satu hari saja bisa terjadi lebih dari tiga kali Trading dari satu Investor, bayangkan berapa Brokerage Fee yang akan mereka terima dalam satu harinya. (Hitung sendiri aja ya…!!! he…he..he…!!!).Saya rasa sudah saatnya sekarang ini Pemerintah melalui Departemen-Departement yang terkait membuat suatu Rancangan Undang-Undang perlindungan Calon Tenaga Kerja (Pencari Kerja), agar kasus yang terjadi pada diri saya (dan sesama korban lainnya) tidak terjadi lagi. Amiiin…..!!!.Sekali lagi ah…, kayaknya hati ini belum puas kalau belum bilang…:

Kemarin gw di telp dari perusahaan untuk interview, ngakunya sich dari PT MAXGAIN, gw diminta dateng ke gedung BEJ lantai 29 untuk interview hari selasa besok tgl 11 April 2006. gw ngerasa nggak pernah kirim lamaran kesana koq ada panggilan, aneh ga.. ahirnya gw putuskan harus cari info dulu sblm dateng. ahirnya tau dech gimana reputasinya MAXGAIN, kalo hanya mau tipu-tipu, ga usah repot2 gitu dech… dosa tau
so buat temen-temen yang nyari kerja, hati2 sebelum melangkah..ok!

Royale Theme is a new theme, potentially destined for Windows XP, that has leaked out of Microsoft and onto the web. The theme appears to have come out of a beta version of Media Center 2005 that was in testing.

Enhanced, user-friendly interface
The Media Player 11 interface makes finding the media you want easier than ever. The complicated (and sometimes convoluted) trees that once appeared in the Media Player Library are gone. Now when you select a category from the Library, the content in that category appears off to the right instead of under the category on the left. Finally, no more long album and artist listings that scroll into infinity!

With the trees gone, Media Player 11 is easier to navigate than any of its predecessors. There aren't any lines between the trees, album information, or CD cover art, and the default album art view now shows album art and track information in the center of the screen. All of this makes finding the information you want a lot easier.

Along with enhanced views, the buttons at the top of the interface contain new shortcuts. Some of my favorites include adjusting format and bitrate on the fly for CD ripping, and switching back and forth from audio to data settings for CD burning. With these new shortcuts, you'll spend more time viewing and listening to your media, and less time managing it.

Finally, I love the new playback controls at the bottom of the screen. They're large and easy to use, and intuitive enough for anyone to easily operate. No more fumbling around trying to click those small controls from the old Media Player, and no more awkward scrambling for the mute button when your boss enters the room. "

Make Your Own Label

Plain old-fashioned looking discs are no longer in trend. Few users are employing markers for defining the contents. The new technology injected printing capabilities in writing units and nowadays most of them have LightScribe technology, or LabelFlash.

Transforming a regular DVD into a real piece of artwork is only a matter of your imagination as the tools to do it with are abundant on the market. Provided that Nero is mostly known for its burning capabilities, it was only a matter of time until they released an application specially tailored to help creating unique CD/DVD labels, booklets, inlays or disc labels.

The newest version brings little novelty to the program and the same ease of use is available. Immediately after launching the software, you will be prompted to make your pick regarding the type of document to be created. The list of documents available is not changed and you can select any of the eleven choices (Standard, DVD Case, Multi Box, Maxi, Slim Pack, Mini-CD, Biz Card – rectangular, envelope, Custom and Full Template). Each of them comes with a set of templates you can use unhindered.

As soon as you have elected the desired cover you want to create you can start editing and embellishing it. Though the work in Nero CoverDesigner is very similar to working in an image editor, the set of tools is quite limited. The list on the left hand side consists of a selection tool, line, rectangle and ellipse drawing instruments, two text tools (artistic and text box), image inserting tool and field tool.

At the bottom of the drawing window, there are the elements of the case to be edited. You can customize each of them differently with little difficulty. Choosing a template document is always the easiest but also the less original way to reaching a pleasant result. Nevertheless, there are some advantages as Document Data window automatically pops up and all you have to do is fill in the fields with the title, year of release, artist or publisher's name, type in the name of each track if you are creating a cover for an audio disc etc.

There is no effort in this activity and if one of the available templates are not to your taste just go with the instinct and create your own designs. Adding your data is done from Data menu. Document Data provides all the fields and options for adding the desired text to the label. In the case of an audio disc you can add as many tracks as you want and append their names together with play duration. The application will calculate the entire duration of the disc automatically and add the information at the bottom of the cover. Of course, this can be removed at any time before printing.

The same customization can be made in the case of a data disc. Only this time you have to add the files directly from the computer. They will be appended to the cover together with the file extension, as well. With folders, the process functions the same way as with single files. The only trouble here is that the size of the files is not accurate. All sizes will be shown in MB only and the application does not round it up (a 3.9MB file will be displayed as having 3MB). Also, data with less than 1MB in size will appear with zero MB.

However, it seems that this happens only when creating a Standard Data CD booklet with one of the available templates. If you make your cover by yourself or with Custom template, everything is almost fine because the file size is displayed in bytes with absolutely no marking for decimals. This can be a bit confusing when making the conversion in MB or even KB for some users.

The support for LabelFlash technology makes it easy to print text even on the data side of the DVD. But it seems that there is a bit of work needed in detecting LabelFlash drives. During our testing, the application detected my Hama U3 flash pen as a FlashLabel printing device. I also tried with a regular flash pen and a SanDisk Cruzer U3 stick, but Nero CoverDesigner could not be fooled by them. Of course, there could be no selection of which side to be burned and no settings could be made.

All in all, the application has little changes compared to its earlier version. A few templates have been added and other than this, there is no addition, save for the interface which is definitely better looking.

The Good

The learning curve is smooth and the application is extremely easy to use. It can provide you with a print preview for both regular paper printing as well as for LightScribe and LabelFlash.

There are plenty of paper stocks to choose from and you can add your own customizations to the list. Configuring the application requires little effort from you.

The Bad

The size of the files and folders when creating a Standard data disc booklet with a template is not accurate. The size of the files added to the cover is expressed in bytes.

The Truth

Nero CoverDesigner is a light solution for creating your disc covers. It has too few tools to create a professional result, but the truth is that it was never intended as a full fledged professional cover designer.

It is a fast and pretty good solution for making covers and burning both data and label sides of your DVDs. Very easy to use and learn, Nero CoverDesigner is perfect for the average user.

VMware Creates Open Source VMware Tools

VMworld 2007 was the place where VMware, Inc. announced their release of a majority of VMware Tools as open source software, all making part of the Open VIrtual Machine Tools project. VMware Tools comprises a number of guest operation system virtualization components that enhance performance and can improve the management of VMware virtual
machines.

Open Virtual Machine Tools enables VMware, by integrating Linux distribution partners to streamline the delivery, maintenance and support of these guest OS components, to better support their customers. The areas where collaboration with the community is expected include porting to new operating systems, creating new technologies and increasing the involvement in the creation and testing process.

Paul Poppleton, senior staff IT engineer at Qualcomm, considers Open Virtual Machine Tools the best solution for reducing costs and better support Qualcomm's virtualized Linux deployment, and he thinks that VMware has created a clear path for Linux distributors to integrate VMware Tools within the operating system.

VMware is also working with Ubuntu, Novell, Red Hat and others to integrate open-sourced VMware Tools in the system's setup process. The founder of the Ubuntu project, Mark Shuttleworth said: "We are very pleased with VMware's demonstrated ability to work with the open source community. Open Virtual Machine Tools streamlines the process of providing ISVs with an edition of Ubuntu optimized for virtual appliances that follows the JeOS concept of 'Just Enough Operating System' and allows us to provide end users of the Ubuntu operating system with a compelling out-of-the-box experience. We look forward to the debut of Open Virtual Machine Tools within a future release of Ubuntu."

Open Virtual Machine Tools will be released under GPLv2 and GPLv2-compatible licenses, and a commercial version will be available too. The decision to release the product under the afore-mentioned licenses was taken because the VMware wanted their software to be consistent with the Linux kernel's license.

Breakthrough: First Individual Human Genome Decoded

This is one of the greatest discoveries since the emergence of genetics: the first individual human genome ever sequenced, a complete personal DNA blueprint. The famous researcher Craig Venter has found a much higher genetic variation among humans than scientists had previously believed.

"The 2.8 billion contiguous bits of genetic code will also hasten advances in preventative medicine," said Venter, also co-author of the research.

"Within five years, faster and cheaper sequencing techniques
could produce complete genomes for 10,000 people, laying the foundation for an era of individualized genomics. Once we have those, we will basically be able to sort out every fundamental question about nature versus nurture, what's genetic and what's environment," he added.

The new research wiped out the widespread concept that all humans are genetically 99.9 % alike. Venter was one of the first to advocate this in 2000 after the completion of the first map of the human genome, a project in which he was also involved. But those works significantly underestimated genetic diversity because the whole was the result of DNA samples achieved from several individuals.

The new genome, called "HuRef", shows more complex differences than previously detected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (changes of just one nucleotide, the building molecular bricks of DNA), which determine simple mutations, once believed to be the main cause of differences in human traits and disease vulnerability.

It seems that changes in the previously disregarded "junk DNA" are equally important.

"This dispels the notion we had in 2000 and 2001 that we all have exactly the same genes in the human population. It would have been very disturbing if the range of characteristics that we see all came down to a few simple SNP variations," said Venter.

Now it appears that individual genome can vary from individual to individual up to 44 % of genes.

"This is a number that geneticists and biologists have been wondering about for 50 to 100 years," said co-author Stephen Scherer, a geneticist at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

The 2000 human genome project was already made in a proportion of 60 % on Venter's own DNA and "HuRef" was finished based on this support, an additional sum of $10 million and 3 years.

Many are concerned that personal gene health information could become a routine and would lead to genetic discrimination. Venter found on his genome a genetic propensity toward Alzheimer's and cardiovascular disease and he has started taking statins, drugs forestalling both conditions.

But insurers or employers could use data of genetic diseases or propensity to them or addictions. Still, the advantages could be much higher.

"We hope to teach people they should welcome it as a breath of fresh air that gives them opportunities in their lives."

Called MXPlay Web, the Firefox add-on part is a simple orange MXPlay button that sits in your toolbar. Whenever you navigate to a Web page that includes MP3 files, the button transforms into a musical note. Click that note, and you can "play" that Web page in a pop-up music player.

After you select "Play this page," MXPlay Web will list all of the available MP3 songs on that Web page. You can then mark any of your favorites and save them to a personal playlist. Unfortunately, once you create that playlist, MXPlay Web somewhat randomly puts them into an order that you cannot change manually.

Just like the full app, MXPlay Web lets you customize the sound of the music using the same unique graphic interface. Drag and drop the head icon (the listener) and each of your available speakers to a specific location on the screen, which affects sound levels and direction. Google has finally released their popular Desktop Search software for Linux users, coming some 3 years after it was first introduced for Windows. The new Google Desktop for Linux can help a user find files, documents, web history, emails and more. On their Google Desktop blog, Google describes their product as:

For most Linux users, looking for files, documents, or emails usually involves some combination of ‘find’ and ‘locate,’ but sometimes these tools don’t quite do what you’re looking for, like finding that single PDF containing the specific topic you’re looking for. Or you just wish there was a much easier way to find something than ‘find /home/username -name ‘*.pdf’ and ‘pdftotext pdf_file_name.pdf output.txt…’

So that’s why today we’re releasing Google Desktop for Linux. Developed primarily out of our Beijing office, it includes almost all the features from the first Windows version of Google Desktop Search plus the Quick Search Box, so you can quickly search through all your files, emails, web history, and more. Just hit ‘Ctrl’ twice to bring up the Quick Search Box and start finding your stuff!

I am glad to see Google coming out with this software for Linux users. It demonstrates that Linux is finding a place in the desktop world of computing. I am also sure we will see Linux distributions that just may incorporate the Google Desktop in their future releases.

This one is called Fresh UI from Fresh Devices and is a freebie. Nope, never heard of it nor tried it, but I guess I will. Over to Fresh Devices web site to take a look at the product. Fresh Devices states that their products is:

Sounded impressive so I downloaded and took it for a spin. You have to register with Fresh Devices to get a registration number to fully use their tweaker or any of their other products. Once that was completed I navigated around Fresh UI. Well I must admit that this is a highly configurable tweaking tool. This puts Microsoft’s TweakUI way behind the flow.

One of the things that I noticed and I found of interest was something I believe a system builder might find useful. We have all had a client or two that likes to go into to Control Panel and play with the settings. I had one person who wanted larger icons so they tweaked the settings to 72 points. Everything was so screwed up you couldn’t even get to the Start button. LOL. I was able to repair the settings with a admonishment of not to play around anymore. But a few weeks later I was back again with another repair for a tweak that went bad.

Anyway, there are plenty of tweaks available and there is something for everyone. Oh, they even have a tweak for playing Hearts in which by pressing 4 keys at once, you can view your opponents hand. Now that’s important! Enjoy. :-)

Microsoft's lessons from the desktop

Pete Boden wants people at Microsoft to think like criminals. That's why the company held its first "Blue Hat" meeting in 2005, which invited hackers onto the corporate campus for lectures and meetings intended to expose security employees to the mentality of digital intruders.

Although it has become a popular biannual event, Blue Hat can still be an unnerving experience at times as guest hackers occasionally break Microsoft products in front of the people who built them. But studying such simulated attacks--a process known as "threat modeling"--provides invaluable lessons in teaching developers how an application can be attacked and what the security controls should be.

"Often times, we find that developers are thinking like a developer or like a user," said Boden, senior director for MSN and Windows Live security at Microsoft.

That's the challenge facing Microsoft. Many company developers and executives believe that securing Web applications is no different from protecting PC desktop software, something the company has learned over the course of three decades. At the same time, Microsoft must acknowledge the crucial differences in pace and scale that are presenting some of the most difficult security challenges ever encountered in digital technology.

For all its successes, Microsoft has in the past reacted slowly to industry change or has underestimated its impact. Case in point: back in the mid-1990s the company misjudged the significance of the Internet and Web-based computing. What followed has become equal parts lesson and legend, a call to arms from Bill Gates that ultimately sank arch rival Netscape Communications and set the course of Internet history. More recently, Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer have admitted to miscalculating the value of Web search and digital music, long after Google and Apple stole the show.

It is understandable, therefore, why Microsoft is determined not to fall behind in Web security. The key, according to many within the company and beyond, is not treating it like just another set of desktop bugs.

"The same rules apply. It is not a new science, it is a different environment to apply the same science," Boden said. However, he stresses, "We have to be very careful not to get complacent about saying we understand the problem, because it is going to change right in front of our eyes."

The 18-year company veteran understands why many at Microsoft cling to the notion that Web and desktop security are essentially the same. Although the types of threats change, Boden says desktop and server security lessons are equally valid when applied to online applications.

"There are pieces that are different," he said. "But the discipline of understanding what could break, how it could break, the impact of it breaking, how we protect it, how we respond to any event, those are fundamentally the same."

The main differences--and they are crucial--are speed and size. As Boden says, securing Web applications is all about scaling; if security doesn't scale, data could be at risk.

A year ago, Microsoft had about 30,000 servers in its data centers to support its online services. This year that's up to 80,000, and more growth is planned.

"The business stakes are enormous in this area," Boden said. "If we or anybody in this business violates the users' trust, then we're essentially out of the business."

Learning the hard way
If Microsoft veterans sometimes sound as if they've seen it all before, there's good reason: they've learned the hard way.

Five years ago, Microsoft's customers were getting hammered. That's when Gates launched his Trustworthy Computing initiative to make security a priority. Industry analysts have praised the effort, even though there are still plenty of vulnerabilities found in Microsoft software and attacks still occur.

Inside the MSN and Windows Live security offices, banners still work to remind employees of the importance of security, and a "Security Scorecard" keeps track of performance and ties into individual reviews.

The regimented approach hasn't always been welcomed by the rank and file. Like human resources and IT staffs, the security department of any company is sometimes viewed like the internal affairs division within the police force--they're paid to keep an eye on you. The 55 members of the MSN and Windows Live security team set policies, assess risks and respond to security incidents.

Not surprisingly, initial efforts to reach out to other departments and employees were met with trepidation.

"We had a robotic image on a lot of our awareness campaign materials last year, and it portrayed a very stern, standoffish approach to the team," Boden said. "We went away from that, specifically because we want to build better relationships with the development teams."

Things are better now. Boden's department is engaged in an ongoing marketing campaign within the company, which includes hosting regular happy hours with local brews and chips and salsa.

"Redhook, Mac and Jack's, we're not short on beer here in the Northwest," Boden said.
